Libraries

—Headmaster Vance Wilson

“I do think a love of reading unequivocally profits a person his entire life.”
St. Albans’ libraries foster intellectual curiosity, sharing of ideas, development of research skills, and a love of reading which is the basis for all learning. As a member of the Closewide District Libraries with Beauvoir and the National Cathedral School for Girls, St. Albans libraries support the curriculum through individual collections and a sharing of joint resources.

In the Lower School, learning is centered on reading and discussion of all literary genres. Pedagogy is balanced with quiet reading sessions. As a student comments, silent reading is a positive experience during his hectic day life. “It is really fun and enjoyable to read, and I wish I could read more.”

In the Upper School, students research bioethics issues, identify primary sources for their United States history term paper (a junior-year rite of passage), and synthesize interdisciplinary resources for independent study projects on topics ranging from Dante to Derrida.

The libraries blend a reverence for traditional teaching methods with knowledge of and enthusiasm for emerging technologies. In both the Lower and Upper Schools, the libraries are incubators for new digital tools, providing the space and support necessary for their growth in use. “There is very little difference between media as they relate to our goals of getting St. Albans students interested in thinking critically,” according to Upper School librarian, Glenn Kantz.

Located in Washington D.C.,  St. Albans School is a private, all boys day and boarding school. For more than a century, St. Albans has offered a distinctive educational experience for young men in grades 4 through 12. While our students reach exceptional academic goals and exhibit first-rate athletic and artistic achievements, as an Episcopal school we place equal emphasis upon moral and spiritual education.
