Swim Club

All visitors to St. Albans School's Swim Club should park on Pilgrim Road or in the Cathedral parking garage, and avoid parking on neighborhood streets. All visitors should use the garage’s main entrance, which is located at the Wisconsin Ave. traffic light near Hearst Hall. Visitors should not use the Woodley Road entrance to the Garage. Thank you for your cooperation.

Pool Closed

Thank you for a wonderful season! The pool is now closed and will reopen on Monday, September 10.
The St. Albans Swim Program has served the Washington community since 1963. Membership includes use of the beautiful indoor Joseph J. Lawrence Pool, located on the St. Albans School campus beside the Washington National Cathedral at 3551 Garfield Street, N.W., near the intersection of Garfield and Massachusetts Avenue. The Lawrence Pool is an attractive, fully tiled, six-lane, twenty-five yard, indoor facility in bright and comfortable surroundings. The temperature of the pool water and the room is maintained at 82° F.

The St. Albans Swim Club gives members, and their guests, use of the Lawrence Pool during posted hours. Memberships may be purchased for a 10-visit pass or an entire season, which runs from September 10, 2018 to August 2, 2019.

    The 2018–2019 season will begin on Monday, September 10, 2018. The final day of the pool season will be on Friday, August 2, 2019. School-year and summer hours will be posted.

    All guests must be escorted and registered by a member.

    All types of membership are nontransferable, non-assignable, and nonrefundable. Seasonal memberships expire on the date indicated on the membership card. 10-Visit Memberships will expire at the end of the calendar year indicated on the membership card.

    All 10-Visit Memberships purchased PRIOR to the 2017-2018 season must be used by December 21, 2018.

  • Swim Lessons


    These classes provide fun opportunities for fitness, water safety, and recreational swimming for all ages. Classes are open to the public. Swim Club membership is not required.

    Weekend Program


    Open to all ages; Saturday and Sunday. All classes are 30-minutes. All classes meet once per week. Please register for one day - Saturday or Sunday. Students MUST attend classes on the day and time for which they register. If a class is missed, then students may choose either of the available make-up dates.

    Beginners, Ages 3-5**
    Child does not need any experience but must be able to separate from parent and child must be a minimum of 3 years of age by the 1st day of class. Parents will be asked to start the session in the water with the swimmers. This class teaches children to dogpaddle unaided, float on their back and put their face in the water.
    30-minute lesson/1:4 ratio

    **Parents must plan to accompany their child in the water in this group for the first few classes.

    Beginners, Ages 6+
    Child does not need any experience. This class teaches children to be comfortable in the water, getting their face wet and floating on their front and back.

    1:40-2:10 PM

    Intermediate, Ages 3-5
    Child needs to be able to put face in the water, swim 5 feet unaided and float independently on their back. This class introduces proper freestyle and kicking on their back.

    Intermediate, Ages 4+
    Child needs to be able to put their face in the water, swim 10 feet unaided and float independently on their back. This class introduces proper freestyle and kicking on their back.

    Advanced, Ages 4+
    Child needs to be able to swim freestyle 12.5 yards and kick on their back for 12.5 yards. This class teaches proper freestyle breathing techniques, and introduces backstroke.

    Advanced, Ages 5-12
    Child needs to be able to swim freestyle for 1 length and kick on their back for 1 length. This class teaches proper breathing techniques, backstroke, and introduces breaststroke.

  • Lifeguard Training & Recertification


    The St. Albans Aquatics Program offers the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course. Enrollees must be at least 15 years of age and able to pass a water-skills screening test on the first day of the class. Full-course participants must attend ALL days in order to receive Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certification. The certification is valid for 2 years.

    Recertification Schedule


    Candidates for recertification must have a current certification that is expiring to be eligible for recertification. Recertification will be offered on the first day of the full course. Candidates MUST be available for the ENTIRE day.

    Participants will be asked to fill out basic contact information as well as emergency forms. These forms MUST be completed before usage of the facility will be permitted.
  • Summer Swim Camp

    Please check back in January for 2019 swim camp information.
  • Pool Policies

    For safety reasons, the pool may be closed on snow days, during electrical thunderstorms, or other severe weather. Please visit the school's website, www.stalbansschool.org, to check the status before coming to the pool. If school has delayed opening, then there will be no morning lap swimming. If school is closed, the pool is closed for the day.

    • The ladder-assisted lanes (#1 and #6) will be reserved for children, persons with disabilities, and nonswimmers.
    • Guests must be accompanied by a member. The guest fee is $10 per visit.
    • Members may rent the Lawrence Pool for private events for $400 per hour. Private events are limited to 20 guests. Please contact us for more details.
    • The St. Albans Swim Program reserves the right to cancel any class with fewer than three participants in attendance.
    • St. Albans encourages all visitors to consider alternatives to driving to the School. Visitors who drive to St. Albans are encouraged to park in the parking garage entered from Wisconsin Avenue, directly in front of the Washington National Cathedral.
